I have recently been following Nina Yau over on her amazing blog Castles in the Air. After really liking her stuff and downloading her free ebook which truly was inspirational, I decided to buy her book “The Radical Minimalist”.  I loved every page, it was so uplifting and definitely a kick-ass guide covering; It’s okay to quit – how and why we should, Re-inventing yourself, Looking after yourself, Advice on getting rid of stuff and eliminating, … Read More

Post Children of Alcoholics Week

A Change is Gonna Come

As many of my regular readers know, I’m a very proud Trustee for The National Association for Children of Alcoholics; I was also a child of an alcoholic mother, who passed away on my 40th birthday, or perhaps Mother’s Day; she lay dead for a week before she was found.

Such is the way for so many alcohol dependents. They lock themselves away in a self-imposed bubble of isolation, so as not to trouble, or interact with the world outside.

I must admit, it made the next few birthdays and Mother’s Days particularly tricky to handle emotionally, but as I hurtle towards my 45th birthday, I feel I’m comfortably the other side of that all-encompassing sadness.

Top Tips to Better Understand our Lover

Tracey Smith, tips for a better relationshipValentine’s Day is fast approaching and I have to confess, I can’t stand it!

It’s not just the commercial aspect of it that get’s up my beak, it’s more the fact that we’re supposed to be all hearts and flowers to each other on the 14th to show how much we love our partners.

Meantime, in the ‘real’ world, what happens when you’re 20 years married, have a house full of poorly kids, the bills haven’t stopped sliding through the letterbox, you’ve got deadlines to meet, the laundry is stacking up, the dishwasher is on the blink and you’re due on!

Active Reduced Sticker Shopping

I filled the car up with go-juice this week for the first time since the VAT price hike and boy, what a shocker; it came in at a hefty £71 / US$110.

I don’t make many journeys in it to be honest, but it’s made me all the more determined to make every single journey count, so whilst en route from A to B, I’m going to stop at the supermarkets to actively hunt out the yellow-stickered produce reductions.

If I’m ever in a big store, I do do it anyway, religiously, but then all too often I find myself seduced by the shiny signs and think, ‘Oh, I’ll just get that and hmm, that looks interesting, I’ll give it a go…’.

Before you know it, you’re the other side of a receipt that has three figures on it.

We have been away on a Buddhist retreat for New Year; it was amazing and has inspired us so much. The evening started with an introduction followed by a wonderful vegetarian buffet (no alcohol) and then prayers until midnight.  The next day was a mixture of teachings, meditation and coffee breaks, all meals provided and a chance to talk to others in a positive environment.  We had time to ponder over our lives and to see if we were heading in the … Read More

Pondersome…

We need to understand and mentally affirm the true meanings behind ‘free’, in order for us to be capable enough to graciously accept and to unconsequentially give.

‘Pay It Forward’ With Me

I don’t know about you, but I love a good DVD!

There’s nothing nicer than getting it, planning the night you’re going to snuggle up to watch it, organising nibbles and drinks for the occasion and maybe even inviting a few mates to view it with you.

And if that film happens to move you so much, you’re nudged into positive action, then I’d say that’s a win-win situation; here’s one that I only heard about this morning and it’s already done a complete number on me!
